Postdoc Talks – Introduction to the German Academic System
The German academic system, with its diverse career paths and unique structures, often bewilders newcomers and international researchers alike. This talk demystifies this complex landscape, exploring traditional career routes like Habilitation alongside newer options such as junior professorships and research group leadership. From the centuries-old university traditions to the modern reforms of the Bologna Process, we'll unpack the system's intricacies and contradictions.
Participants will gain insights into the distinctions between universities and universities of applied sciences ("Fachhochschule"), the implications of the WissZeitVG on career planning, and opportunities for independent research funding. The lecture also touches on career options beyond academia and equips especially international researchers with the knowledge to navigate the German academic system confidently and make informed career decisions.
Postdoc Talks: The online series provides an open platform for discussing topics central to the postdoctoral career path. You can gain insights from experts in the research landscape and the academic community, while also exchanging ideas with other postdocs.
This event is open to postdocs from all HRA’s member institutions. Participation is free of charge, prior registration is requested. For further information please read the conditions of participation.

Trainer:
As a trainer and coach for scientists, Dr. Julia Schmidt specializes in guiding (international) researchers on their path through the German academic system. Her approach combines emotional and mental coaching with intercultural aspects and practical strategies specifically tailored to the challenges working in a new academic environment with an unfamiliar set of (often unspoken) rules. Through customized coaching and workshops, she helps scientists not only enhance their intercultural skills but also develop their personal resilience and mental strength. This enables participants to meet the diverse demands of their research careers with increased effectiveness and mental balance. Dr. Julia Schmidt studied Ethnology and earned her doctorate in Intercultural German Studies/Sociolinguistics from the University of Göttingen. Since 2014, she has been supporting young scientists in their academic careers, initially at various universities and research institutions (e.g., University of Tübingen, Forschungszentrum Jülich), and since 2022, as an independent trainer and coach.
