Building and Managing Your Research Group
The workshop raises critical awareness of how to build research capacity and navigate research leadership with confidence. By reflecting on different styles of leadership, it provides hands-on tools and techniques to develop vision and mission, set goals, identify specific needs, recruit and develop research talent, manage expectations and review progress.
By participating in the workshop, you will be better equipped to:
- enhance research capacity as your career advances
- understand what makes an effective research leader
- set out vision and direction for your research group
- identify your needs and recruit the most qualified candidates
- employ appropriate tools and techniques to foster progress
- and realise your full research leadership potential
Methods
This highly interactive workshop employs theoretical input and practice scenarios, plenary discussions, individual and small group work, experience sharing, and expert advice. It is limited to 12 participants and will be presented in English.

Requirements for participation:
- Attendance: Participation is only possible, if you can guarantee an uninterrupted attendance.
- Attention: Online events require the same undivided attention as face-to-face events. Please refrain from parallel activities.
- Interaction: In general HRA events are interactive and require your active participation.
- Visibility: Please turn on your camera, if possible. Especially in our workshops, this is essential for a productive working environment.

Trainer:
Dr. Thomas Koch is a research management consultant and certified business trainer and coach. He provides hands-on workshops and individual guidance for researchers to realize their research ideas and career objectives. Holding a PhD in physical chemistry from the UK, he has over 10 years of international experience as a researcher and over 12 years of experience as a research manager and senior administrator at major German universities.
