Science Communication in Grant Proposals
This workshop is aimed at scientists who apply for funding for their research, especially postdocs. The seminar enables you to adequately reflect the topic of science communication in your grant applications and to implement the communication projects planned within the framework of your research proposals.
The workshop will cover essential basic principles of science communication. You will then develop your own concepts and strategies for the specific communication of your research projects. Thus, the training is designed to be interactive. Teaching content alternates with practical exercises and question-and-answer sessions. This seminar focuses on the section on science communication in grant proposals. It is not a general course on grant writing.
Contents
- The strategic framework for science communication in grant proposals
- The alignment of communication goals with target groups
- The selection of suitable communication formats
- Resource planning and budgeting
- The evaluation of communication activities
Technical information
The seminar is implemented with the video conferencing software "Zoom". Exercises in the seminar context will be carried out as Google Office solutions (e.g. google docs, sheets, slides or google forms). These applications are used within the framework of the GDPR-compliant corporate solution Google G-Suite. You do not need your own Google account for this.
To participate in the interactive seminar, you need a working microphone and camera on your PC/laptop. It is necessary that you switch on the camera and microphone during the seminar.
Organisational information
The virtual seminar will be held on two consecutive dates. Each session lasts 3.5 hours, including a short break. Please also reserve some time between the sessions to work on an assignment.
HRA’s Project for Research Communication: This workshop is part of a larger research communication project which is funded by the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung.

Dr. Lorenz Adlung holds a doctorate in systems biology and is a science slammer. Lorenz can be heard on the science podcast "bugtales.fm", which he runs together with Jasmin Schreiber, and as a science rapper under his stage name "do:ku". Following his time as a visiting scientist at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, Lorenz is leading an independent junior research group at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf since 2021. At NaWik, he passes on his expertise in different seminars.
Dr. Jens Foell holds a doctorate in neuropsychology, is an editor and bestselling author ("Foellig nerdiges Wissen").
In his many years of research at ZI Mannheim and Florida State University, he investigated the connection between the brain and experience and wrote, among other things, an award-winning publication on brain activity in phantom pain. In 2017, he founded the Twitter account Real Scientists DE, which offers its users insights into the work and lives of different scientists each week. He was nominated for the Grimme Prize in 2022 for his work on the science programme Maithink X.
