Writing Outside the Box. Technique, Inspiration & Practice
Writing for a non-scientific audience has you breaking out into sweat? Don’t worry, you are not alone. The good news: while talent plays a role as it does in any skill, so does technique and practice. Engaging writing is a skill that you can learn. This course will focus on writing for web and social media, but many of the techniques we cover will help you with your scientific writing as well.
This course is an online course. In order to make this a feature instead of a bug, the course is broken down into several live sessions. The time in between we will use for exercises and short peer reviews which are self-scheduled. In addition, you will get short individual feedback sessions which we will schedule once the course has started. Despite the remote setup, the workshop will take a practical approach.

- The art of storytelling without losing sight of the facts
- The house always wins… or does it? Guidelines and practical tips on how to work with social media
- The Swoosh Principle a.k.a. practical writing exercises with feedback.
Time table
- 2 May 2022: 14:30-16:30 + circa 2-3 hours of self-scheduled work, peer feedback and short individual feedback sessions until the next live session
- 9 May 2022: 14:30-16:00 + circa 2-3 hours of self-scheduled work, peer feedback and short individual feedback sessions until the next live session
- 16 May 2022: 14:30-16:30+ optional 15 minutes of individual feedback
- Time frame for individual meeting slots: 2-3 weeks after the final session. Will be scheduled between second and last session.
HRA’s Project for Research Communication: This workshop is part of a larger research communication project which is funded by the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung.

Anna Ross is the co-founder of grasshopper kreativ. The company specializes in strategic creative communication, media production and training and has a strong focus in science communication. Anna brings 10+ years of experience in content creation and teaching to the table. The Tübingen- and Yale-educated creative strategist is passionate about inspiring people to share knowledge and communicate their passion. When she is not on her phone or mapping out ideas in her bullet journal, you might catch her balling on a court near you or galloping through the Mongolian grasslands.
